I’ve always known I wanted to work in technology and innovation, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t trapped doing run-of-the-mill IT. I wanted to be somewhere that pushed the boundaries and used technology to its best advantage.

I was surprised when I spoke with a Suncorp representative at a career fair. I always thought of Suncorp as a bank, and I didn’t realise they had a large technology team and a dedicated labs space for developing new ideas.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I now work in Suncorp's Labs, where as a team we find problems to solve using the latest technologies.

Our team came up with a concept to develop a Smart Fuel app, that would not only show the live prices of fuel at stations across Queensland and New South Wales, but would also predict upcoming prices to help customers decide when and where they should refuel. I’m particularly interested in data science, so my role in the team was to come up with the model that would predict those future prices. We built the app in six weeks, from first concept to first deployment. It’s now available in the Apple App store, which is pretty cool to see.

From day one, I’ve had the chance to play with some pretty cool technologies and I’ve built my skills and portfolio beyond what I could have imagined.

There is a strong culture and appetite for innovation at Suncorp. As a company, we host ‘hackathon’ events, open to all employees, where teams work intensely on software projects to help solve a business opportunity.

We also support fintech and insurtech start-up companies. Through our Digital Incubator Program, we give start-ups access to the resources and experts we have here in Suncorp’s Labs to help them their build their ideas.

From day one, I’ve had the chance to play with some pretty cool technologies and I’ve built my skills and portfolio beyond what I could have imagined. I also know that I’m making a real difference, from helping customers compare prices, to improving car safety for learner drivers, to supporting start-ups. I like knowing that my work is helping people and having a real impact.
