It can be pretty daunting leaving university for the working world. I think what made me nervous was feeling as though I would need to know everything right away.
But working in Suncorp’s graduate program, I’ve learned that you don’t need to know everything, you just have to be curious and willing to learn. That’s all they’re looking for.
When I first started working at Suncorp, I had the opportunity to work on a project that required some advanced Excel skills that were beyond my capabilities at the time. But far from being phased, the people in my team were really happy to sit with me and teach me what I needed to know. It meant that I was able to expand my skillset from day one.
I’ve learned that you don’t need to know everything, you just have to be curious and willing to learn. That’s all they’re looking for.
I’ve found that graduates are really valued at Suncorp. Everyone is excited and eager to share their knowledge with graduates, because we’re seen as the future leaders. There is a lot of emphasis on our development, from pairing us with mentors, to creating networking opportunities, to giving us the opportunity to complete role rotations with different areas of the business.
Every team I’ve worked with has encouraged me to put forward my ideas. It’s less: “this is how we do it” and more: “how can we make this better?”
