Flood recovery effort enters rebuilding phase

Suncorp CEO & Managing Director Michael Cameron has visited flood-affected customers in Townsville as the insurer moves into the rebuilding phase of the recovery process.

Mr Cameron announced Suncorp was on track to complete all home assessments this month, and rebuilding works are now well under way.

Mr Cameron said this marked an important milestone in the recovery effort.

“While there has already been a lot of hard work since the floods hit in early February, completing all the thousands of assessments means we’re now getting on with the job of rebuilding homes,” Mr Cameron said.

"Our builders are working with hundreds of local trades and suppliers, and I’m reiterating to them the importance of their work in rebuilding not just people’s homes, but their lives.

“We’re committed to supporting local builders and tradespeople and, together, we must continue working hard to get Townsville back up and running again.

"We know people have been through a physically and emotionally challenging time. Many can’t return home or have lost their treasured possessions. Getting our customers back into their homes quickly is our number one priority,” he said.

Mr Cameron met with customers in some of the worst-affected areas to hear how the work was progressing.

“I am proud that the support provided by Suncorp makes such a difference when our customers are facing such tough times,” he said.

With home assessments all due for completion this month, Suncorp has also:

  • completed 98% of all motor claims assessments, with 90% finalised
  • paid out almost $50 million in contents claims
  • completed 92% of commercial claims assessments
  • hundreds of local companies and suppliers being utilised

Mr Cameron also met with Suncorp team members at the newly opened dedicated claims Customer Support Centre to thank them for all their hard work.

The pop-up, located in the heart of Townsville, will ensure customers of all Suncorp’s insurance network of brands, including AAMI, Apia, Bingle, Vero and Resilium can continue to access face-to-face support throughout the recovery process.

“Our people have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to support our customers. Some of them were also affected by the flooding but continued to show up to ensure we could be there for our customers when they needed us most.

“The Centre is a first for Suncorp Insurance and further demonstrates our commitment to supporting Townsville for the long-term. We’ve had hundreds of customers take up the option to meet with us face-to-face to ask questions or check in on how their claim is progressing.”
