Suncorp supports Get Ready Queensland Week with new resilience resources

2025 marks the fifth year of Suncorp’s support for the 'Get Ready Queensland' (GRQ) program operated by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).

In August 2020, Suncorp became the official sponsor of Get Ready Queensland to enhance community preparedness to disasters. A focus of the formal partnership is supporting the promotion of Get Ready Queensland Week (6-12 October 2025); the state’s annual disaster season preparedness campaign encouraging residents to put their plans in place before severe weather strikes.

Get Ready Queensland officially kicked off with launch events in Brisbane and Townsville

Launch events for Get Ready Queensland Week 2025 were held at Kenmore State High School in Brisbane and Townsville Grammar School, Townsville, on Tuesday, 7 October. These events featured the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest severe weather outlook for Queensland.

Guests at the Brisbane event included the Hon. Ann Leahy MP, Minister for Local Government and Water and Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers, Jake Ellwood, CEO Queensland Reconstruction Authority, Chris Stream, Acting Deputy Commissioner Queensland Police Service, Johnathan Thurston AM, Ambassador for Get Ready Queensland and Suncorp, Laura Boekel, Senior Meteorologist Bureau of Meteorology and Anna Cartwright, Suncorp Executive General Manager Consumer Prevention and Protection.

In Townsville, guests included Adam Baillie MP, State Minister for Townsville, Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney, Acting Mayor of Townsville, Natalie Marr MP, State Minister for Thuringowa, representatives from Suncorp partner the North Queensland Cowboys, RSPCA, Queensland SES and more.

Ms Cartwright said experience has shown Suncorp how crucial it is to be prepared, plan ahead and understand your risks.

"As the proud partner of Get Ready Queensland for the past five years, we proudly join in urging Queenslanders to Get Ready ahead of disaster season," Ms Cartwright said.

That means reviewing your insurance, making a disaster plan with your family, including an emergency kit, and checking that your property is as resilient as possible. Simple things like clearing gutters, securing loose items, and knowing where to get accurate weather information can make a significant difference.

Suncorp is proud to introduce new initiatives to promote resilience, including an enhanced Stay Safe Activity Book

The new edition of the Stay Safe Activity Book is a practical tool that blends disaster preparedness with wellbeing messaging, with updated and expanded activities that empower children to understand how small practical things can make a big difference in severe weather. These books will be present at community events around Australia for attendees to take.

Suncorp has also developed new resilience resources for customers through its partnership with the Black Dog Institute. These are designed to provide tips and advice to customers before and after a severe weather event.

Together, the Queensland Reconstruction Authority and Suncorp are working to take a proactive approach that will help reduce the impact of extreme weather in the long run.

Ms Cartwright said: “In the past year, our Disaster Management Centre in Brisbane has increased its capacity to respond faster and reach more customers sooner. We’re using advanced technology, like geospatial mapping, satellite and drone imagery, as well as real-time weather feeds, to equip our team with informed disaster preparation and response.

“We’re also making sure our customers have all the resources they need to stay prepared. Just this week, we launched new resilience resources with the Black Dog Institute, which provide tips and advice to customers before and after a weather event.

“We’ve also added a new edition to our Stay Safe Activity Book. These books are designed to empower families and show them how even the simplest preparation can make a big difference when responding to extreme weather.

“It’s our pleasure yet again to be uniting with the QRA to educate communities on the value of preparing and increasing resilience. Get Ready Queensland is a fantastic opportunity for our customer support teams to connect with communities and help them build resilience and prepare.”

Suncorp teams at the Brisbane and Townsville launch events also handed out newly developed ‘Fix It Fast’ card game packs; a fun educational resource designed to help children and their families understand their weather risks and how to prepare.

Get Ready Queensland community events will continue across the state throughout the week

More than 50 Get Ready events will take place this week across the state, run by councils, community groups and Get Ready Queensland, with a focus on communities impacted by the 2025 floods and helping vulnerable Queenslanders.

Get Ready Queensland’s latest awareness campaign ‘Weather doesn’t plan, but you can’ has also relaunched, led by rugby league great and Suncorp and GRQ Ambassador Johnathan Thurston.

To make it easier for Queenslanders to create a severe weather plan, an online tool is available at getready.qld.gov.au/plan that steps through the process, pre-fills localised information, and provides advice, contacts and checklists.

Suncorp is also encouraging all Queenslanders to enter their address into Suncorp Haven to discover their home’s weather risks and learn how to prepare for storm season. Learn more about Haven.

Get Ready Queensland is a year-round, all hazards, resilience building initiative of the Queensland Government to help communities prepare for natural disasters.

Queenslanders are encouraged to use this week to prepare for the upcoming disaster season by taking the 3 Steps to Get Ready:

  1. Know your risk – Everyone’s disaster risk is different. Knowing what your personal risks are will help you best prepare for severe weather and will reduce the impacts on your family and property.

  2. Make a plan – Make a household emergency plan so your family knows what to do and who to contact in times of disaster. It will give you peace of mind knowing important information is accessible and in one place.

  3. Pack a kit – Grab a few extra items for an emergency kit next time you’re out shopping. Store your kit somewhere safe so you have it stocked and ready if the weather turns bad.
