Bold voices, bright futures: Why we proudly ‘Wear It Purple’ at Suncorp

Why we Wear It Purple

Wear It Purple Day returns on 29 August 2025 and this year's theme is ‘bold voices, bright futures’.

It is an opportunity for LGBTIQ+ young people and allies in schools, community organisations, universities and workplaces to come together and advocate for a more inclusive future.

Since its inception 15 years ago, people have proudly been wearing purple to demonstrate to the young rainbow community that they are celebrated, accepted and respected.

It was originally founded by students in response to global stories of teenagers taking their own lives due to bullying and harassment.

Fast forward to 2025 and Wear It Purple Day has become a movement of support and solidarity.

At Suncorp, we know that our people are at their best when they are empowered to bring their authentic selves to work.

Suncorp Executive General Manager Workforce Jen Delves highlighted the importance of inclusivity at Suncorp.

“Wear It Purple Day is an opportunity for our people to celebrate diversity and show their support for the young LGBTIQ+ community,” she said.

“At Suncorp, we believe that we all have a role to play in creating a safe space for our people to be their authentic selves.

Inclusivity is the driving force behind everything we do at Suncorp, for both for our people and our customers.

Bold voices, bright futures

Suncorp Learning Governance Lead Kyrra is in a same-sex marriage and has two daughters.

She believes that societal change starts with our young people and this year’s Wear It Purple Day theme ‘bold voices, bright futures’ resonates with her.

“I came out to my parents when I was 14 and I was fortunate that my family was very supportive,” she said.

“I lived in a small country town and experienced bullying and harassment at school, but I always had that safe space at home.

“For me, Wear It Purple Day and every other day of the year are about showing up and being there for those who haven’t yet found their 'bold voice'.”

Since her school days, Kyrra has seen the creation of more safe and inclusive spaces for the younger generation.

While things are “moving in the right direction”, she has seen the growth of social media lead to online bullying.

Kyrra has two daughters aged four and seven and she believes that creating a transparent and nurturing environment at home is vital to building confidence and empowering the next generation.

“We are very open with our children and we hope that they can then educate their peers on what diversity truly looks like, with the hope that it will create a positive ripple effect,” she said.

“We also need to value the voices and decisions of our young people; their opinions matter so let’s foster and support that.”

Tying into this year’s Wear It Purple Day theme, Kyrra has given her perspective on what a ‘bright future’ means to her.

“It is about people feeling accepted and supported so that they can achieve their full potential without any societal limitations, whether at school, the workplace or elsewhere,” she said.

Inclusivity and advocacy at Suncorp

At Suncorp, our people are as diverse as the communities we serve.

Our Employee Resource Group (ERG) Amplify is a vibrant community that provides a safe space for our people.

Amplify is committed to advocating for and celebrating LGBTIQ+ employees and allies.

The Amplify ERG is a safe space for employees to share lived experiences, find connections and work to continuously improve the workplace for current and future employees.

This includes celebrating days of significance across the LGBTIQ+ community.

Earlier this year, Suncorp won gold at the Australian LGBTQ+ Inclusion Awards, recognising organisations that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to equality.

Kyrra is an Engagement Lead and mentor for Amplify and her leaders are “extremely supportive” with the additional work she takes on.

“I have always been comfortable in my own skin and when I joined Suncorp it was great to know there were all these Employee Resource Groups in place, not just for the rainbow community but for diversity and inclusion across the board,” she said.

How to get involved with Wear It Purple Day

From a t-shirt to trousers, if you can then wear something purple on 29 August.

But if you don’t have anything purple, there are other ways to show solidarity.

“Take some time to acknowledge the purpose of the day and if you are a parent of young people, think about what you can do to make sure you create a nurturing and safe environment where they can have a voice,” Kyrra said.

Asked how we can all contribute to creating a more inclusive society, Kyrra added: “It is about being comfortable to have those uncomfortable conversations.

“A small thing people can do that has a huge impact is using inclusive language in everyday conversations.”
