Suncorp responds to severe storms across southern Queensland

Damage from large hail, strong winds, and heavy rain has been reported, with more than 2,100 claims lodged as at 11.00am (AEDT) this morning.

Of these about 1,000 are for home and about 1,100 are for motor claims.

The top areas impacted include Bellbowrie, Jindalee, Moggill, Ripley, Ipswich and Redbank Plains.

There have been about 190 claims from another severe weather event across Victoria yesterday, with affected areas including central Victoria and the greater Melbourne region.

Suncorp Acting Executive General Manager Home Claims Customers Cath Stewart said teams in Suncorp’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) were working quickly to respond to claims.

“We began receiving claims yesterday evening as the storm system moved through southern Queensland, with large hail and strong winds reported as the main causes of damage,” Ms Stewart said.

“We encourage those impacted to lodge a claim online as soon as possible so we can begin the assessment process.”

Ms Stewart said the team in Brisbane’s DMC will utilise technology, including geospatial mapping and AI, to streamline the response.

“The DMC is specifically designed so our team can mobilise fast and effectively respond to severe weather events like the one experienced last night,” she said.

“We are using this technology to triage claims and mobilise our assessing teams and builders into the most severely impacted areas today.”

What to do if your home has been impacted by a storm:

• Impacted customers can easily lodge their claims online for any of our insurance brands, including Suncorp Insurance, GIO, AAMI, Apia and Shannons. You don’t need to be at home or have a copy of your policy to lodge your claim – we will have your details.

• If your home is damaged and you can safely access, you don’t need to wait for an insurance assessor to come to begin cleaning up.

• Make a list and take photos of damaged items, including model numbers, to help us replace them.

• Keep your home as ventilated as possible.

• Remove wet contents (carpets, curtains etc) but take photos.

• Take care when walking around your property as hail can shatter glass, leaving small shards in grass and outdoor areas.
