Uniting together on the rainbow road to pride
On Saturday our people played a part in the iconic Australian street party celebrating the LGBTIQ+ community by marching alongside the AAMI-sponsored Broken Heel Festival float at Mardi Gras.
Thirty of our employees marched with the float, which featured the iconic tour bus from the movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Suncorp Group’s Employee Resource Group, Amplify, supports our LGBTIQ+ employees and allies and has been an integral part of this sponsorship since its inception. Amplify was created by our people for our people in order to foster aand inclusive workplace, united together with a common purpose.
Amplify member Belinda Daw said she was thrilled to get the chance to be part of the float and join the celebration.
“I’ve always wanted to be in the parade and now I get the chance to be on one of the most spectacular floats with drag kings and queens and a troupe of my colleagues. It feels like a lifetime achievement! I feel very proud to be working for a company that supports the LGBTIQ+ community and its employees.”
Amplify Committee Chair Shay Johnston said the team members were proud to raise the profile of the culture and history of the LGBTIQ+ community, and to help Suncorp be a welcoming and equal company for not only our employees, but also our customers.
“AAMI’s sponsorship of the Broken Heel Festival and our participation in this parade truly celebrates LGBTIQ+ history and culture and this fills me with enormous pride.
“It says to our LGBTIQ+ employees and customers – we see you, you are valued, and you are welcome here."
At Suncorp we believe everyone should feel safe to bring their whole selves to work without having to hide who they are, for fear of judgement or that it might negatively impact their career.
Executive General Manager Brand & Marketing Mim Haysom said AAMI was proud to sponsor this float for the third year as it demonstrates everyone’s right to belong.
“AAMI is an insurance company that doesn’t just protect your belongings, but your right to belong."
The Broken Heel Festival is sponsored by Suncorp Group’s insurance brand AAMI, and is held in Broken Hill every September, where the movie was originally filmed in 1994.
