Suncorp has been awarded the 2008 General Insurance Company of the Year by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).

Matt Pearson, Suncorp’s CFO Commercial Insurance, said he was delighted to accept the award on behalf of the Suncorp Group.

"This award highlights our achievements in providing innovative products and outstanding service for our customers," Mr Pearson said.

Suncorp effectively manages multiple brands such as Vero, AAMI, APIA, Suncorp and GIO through direct and intermediated distribution channels.

The award was presented last night at the 5th Annual ANZIIF Awards dinner at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

"Like all financial services companies we have faced a challenging external environment over the past 12 months, with a succession of severe weather events and the global credit crisis.

"Despite these challenges we have maintained business momentum while successfully executing a complex merger. Throughout this time, our people have maintained the exceptional customer service that was a trademark of both legacy organisations.

"We are the third largest general insurance group in Australia and the second largest insurer in New Zealand – and we are leaders in our industry. Winning this award reflects that," he said.

Joan Fitzpatrick, CEO of ANZIIF, said that the calibre of this year’s awards was as high as it had ever been.

"This year’s submissions demonstrated a sophisticated industry that is focused on innovation and customer service," she said
